The Square Fish Café is a contemporary restaurant and bar set in the picturesque market village of Lenham, at the foot of the beautiful North Downs.
We are based right in the centre of the village square, in a sensitively-restored grade II listed building, which has been a key premises within the community for decades – serving variously as the old Market House; The Chequers Inn - a Shepherd Neame pub - from the early 19th century onwards, and a tea room and the local petrol station and mechanic in the 1930s.
After successfully running the landmark Chequers Fish Bar for over 17 years, we were keen to expand the business and felt that there was a demand in the village for a new relaxed, warm and welcoming dining destination. When the new premises recently became available, we jumped at the chance to move in, and The Square Fish Café was born!
We pride ourselves on offering a friendly haven in this idyllic part of Kent - serving fresh, modern dishes in a comfortable, informal atmosphere - and look forward to welcoming you soon.

Al fresco dining
Our restaurant provides the perfect setting in which to enjoy a relaxed dining experience with family or friends. Modern, minimalist decor both preserves and highlights the features of this historic building in the beautiful Garden of England. An outdoor seating area looks out onto the medieval village square – the perfect spot for al fresco dining.
The menu offers the best in fresh local fish and seafood, with plenty of options for both carnivores and vegetarians, a few Mediterranean twists inspired by owner Maz Michaelas’ Cypriot heritage, and some French of course from Head Chef Fabian.
With a daily Specials board and a ‘Catch of the day’ showcasing the freshest bounty from the Kent coast, our focus is on quality ingredients where flavour is king.
Our well-stocked bar offers a wide range of wines, ales, lagers, ciders, spirits and cocktails, including many selections from local producers.
We’re all about family here at the Square Fish, and we know how important it is to keep our younger eaters happy. Our great value kids’ menu will keep them smiling, with a variety of favourites served with chips, salad, a drink and for dessert, a scoop of Taywell’s ice cream, all for £5.50.
When it comes to our ingredients, provenance and sustainability are hugely important to us. We’re conscious of how our supply chain impacts the environment and our ethos is to use local, sustainably-sourced produce from within the county where possible.
Fresh veg is provided by L.R. Smith and Sons at Ringlemere Farm in Sandwich, our fish and seafood is fresh off the trawlers in Folkestone and Rye, meat is from ****** and our real dairy ice cream is from Taywell’s in Paddock Wood.
We stock a range of beers from Chapel Down’s Curious Brewery and the Whitstable Brewery just 10 mins down the road in Grafty Green, Biddenden cider and an extensive wine list, including local selections from the Chapel Down Vineyard in Tenterden.
